Japan, country of immigration?

Japan is far from having an image of country of immigration. Two centuries of closing doors and the myth of Japanese homogeneous people and culture are still very dominant in the political discours on immigration. With less than 2 % of the whole population, immigration could be considered as marginal. Nevertheless, since the 1980s, the Japanese society is facing the same conflictual debate on immigration policy - opening or not the borders - and on the national identity. This issue is providing new and stimulating analysis of the emergent situation due to the increase of foreign newcomers during the last 20 years, who are affecting industrial and urban areas between Tokyo and Osaka.
