Abstract:
Compact city policies have been adopted by many local governments in Japan. Yet despite a number of studies showing the merits of the compact city, these policies continue to be criticized within society. In order to correctly respond to these criticisms, I argue that benefit allocation, cost imposition, compensatory measures, and the consensus-building process should be improved.
