Workshop on natural capital in Japan (from ca. 1870 to the present)
Recent empirical work investigating the determinants of long run changes in living standards includes attempts by economic historians and environmental economists to estimate time series of the total value of natural assets for European countries and the United States as a component of total national wealth, and changes in the total stock of natural assets as part of the estimation of Genuine Saving. The aim of the workshop, which is taking place as part of the joint French-Japanese project "natural capital and living standards" (supported on the French side by the PICS CNRS program and on the Japanese side by the Institute of Economic Research, Hitotsubashi University), is to discuss several theoretical issues related to the the role of natural capital as determinant of well-being, and recent advances in estimations procedures that could be used in order to generate yearly time series for the main components of natural capital in Japan covering the period from the 1870. The workshop will not be open to the public.
