Conférencier Guy FAURE (Research fellow at CNRS, Director of the Lyon Institute of East Asian Studies)
  • Discussant: Marc HUMBERT (MFJ UMIFRE 19 CNRS - MAEE)

  • Abstract:
This presentation will draw upon a book just published by IRASEC with the following title: NEW DYNAMICS BETWEEN CHINA AND JAPAN IN ASIA - How to Build the Future from the Past? (World Scientific Books, Singapore 2010), edited by Guy FAURE.
This book is a study of ties between China and Japan and their Asian counterparts. It does not therefore directly treat bilateral relations between these powers, as they already constitute the subject of many other studies. A lengthy perspective has been taken into account in order to recall past legacies, some of which are still painfully contentious, and to record evolutions in attitudes and strategies vis-à-vis Asian countries. This publication is the result of a research project supported by IRASEC, The Research Institute on Contemporary Southeast Asia (USR 3142 – UMIFRE 22 CNRS - MAEE) based in Bangkok, one of the 27 French Research Institutes Abroad, organizing Comparative approaches and transversal studies in social sciences in the Region where they are located.

  • Profile:
Guy FAURE is a Research Fellow at CNRS and Director of the Lyon Institute of East Asian Studies (IAO), at the École Normale Supérieure de Lyon, and head of the Asian Politics Master course at Lyon Institute of Political Studies. He was previously Director of the Research Institute on Contemporary Southeast Asia (IRASEC) in Bangkok (2004-2008), Executive Director of the French Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Japan (1986-1992), and Fellow at the Maison Franco-Japonaise in Tokyo (1983-1986). He taught at Tokyo University and Chuo University, as well as at the School of Oriental Languages (INALCO) in Paris. He will soon take a position as the Head of the Regional Bureau of CNRS in Tokyo.
