ロラン・バルトは注文に応じて書くのを常としたが、彼が夢見ていたのはいっさいの依頼から逃れて〈作品〉を書くこと、それに打ち込むことだった。できれば注文の断わり方を心得て、肝心なことの執筆に備えたいと願っただろう。ただし公刊するためではなく、ただ〈書く〉ために、自動詞的に書くために。依頼や注文に対する彼の態度は非常に両義的で、薬でも毒でもある依存薬物を摂取した人のふるまいのように、隷従と反抗とが入り混じっていた。

Without ignoring the existence of multiple cooperation channels, or seeking to minimise the importance of considerable achievements realised in three decades of cooperation by the two governments towards normalising their relations, the relations between the two Asian giants remain hamstrung by a series of geostrategic and economic rivalries. Despite fast growth in trade and in specific areas of economic cooperation, Beijing-New Delhi ties do not yet amount to a veritable strategic partnership that has been announced on both sides of the Himalayas on many occasions. The Indo-Pacific strategy pursued by many countries in the region (with different meanings and objectives depending on the country) also contributes to hampering cooperation between China and India.

To sustain income levels in face of a rapidly aging society, Japan will need to increase labor productivity. Value added per hour worked has been increasing over the last 30 years, but it remains very low in comparison to other OECD countries. In 2021, it was below 60% the US level. This is surprising given Japan's excellent resource conditions: a high education level of its workforce, high investment in research and development and relative abundance of capital. The presentation will try to resolve Japan's productivity puzzle and discuss possible ways on how productivity could be increased. 


Franz Waldenberger is Director of the German Institute for Japanese Studies (DIJ) in Tokyo. He is on leave from Munich University where he holds a professorship for Japanese Economy. His research focuses on the Japanese Economy, Corporate Governance and International Management. He is editor in chief of the international peer reviewed journal Contemporary Japan. His recent publications include The Future of Financial Systems in the Digital Age (co-edited with M. Heckel, Springer, 2022). As member of the Japanese German Forum and the board of the Japanese German Business Association, he has for many years been working for the betterment of German Japanese relations.
